In 2024, Alfa Romeo is set to introduce its inaugural electric vehicle, marking a significant step in its mission to transform into a fully electric brand by 2027. This forthcoming EV, christened the Milano, was recently confirmed by the automaker.

Contrary to previous speculations that it might bear the name Brennero, inspired by an Italian mountain pass akin to the Tonale and Stelvio models, Alfa Romeo has opted for “Milano.” This choice reflects the brand’s connection to Milan and underscores the vehicle’s urban-oriented design philosophy.

Scheduled for its grand debut in April of the following year, the Milano’s availability in the United States has not been officially affirmed. There are concerns that its dimensions, being a subcompact crossover, might not align with local road conditions. Consequently, the Milano is poised to become the brand’s new entry-level offering, succeeding the Giulietta and Mito hatchbacks. In the United States, the Tonale, a compact crossover featuring a plug-in hybrid powertrain, currently holds the title of the smallest Alfa Romeo.

Although specific technical details for the Milano are yet to be disclosed by Alfa Romeo, the company has indicated that it will present consumers with a choice between electric and gasoline powertrains. This suggests a potential kinship with the Jeep Avenger and Fiat 600 subcompact crossover models, both of which are available with electric or gasoline powertrain options depending on the market.

Underlying the Avenger and 600 is a revised iteration of the CMP platform, which is part of the Stellantis family. Designed with subcompact vehicles in mind, this platform is also utilized in other subcompact crossovers available internationally, such as the DS 3 Crossback and Opel Mokka.

For the Avenger and 600, both unavailable in the U.S., a 54-kWh battery and a 156-horsepower electric motor at the front axle are standard. It is plausible that the Milano may offer enhanced performance to align with Alfa Romeo’s sporty brand image.

Furthermore, Alfa Romeo has unveiled its plans to introduce its first all-electric model in 2025, with rumors suggesting it could serve as a successor to the Giulia sedan. Subsequently, an electric replacement for the Stelvio crossover is purportedly on the horizon for 2026.
