However, early 1990s economic decline and the transfer of Lamborghini ownership to Malaysian and Indonesian investors led to the project’s suspension.

With the 1998 Volkswagen Group’s acquisition of Lamborghini, the project found new life, albeit from a clean slate. Only the fundamental concept, overall dimensions, and the V-10 engine notion were kept. Lamborghini spearheaded the V-10 development under the supervision of Massimo Ceccarani and Maurizio Reggiani. Ceccarani, Lamborghini’s technical director then, passed the mantle to Reggiani in 2006. Reggiani handed over the responsibility to Rouven Mohr in 2022.

For the vehicle’s framework, an aluminum construction based on extruded components welded to cast junction elements was chosen. The body components were then affixed to the chassis through various means, including rivets, screws, or welding, depending on the part’s function. Additional components like front and rear fascias were made of thermoplastic material and bolted together.

The actual vehicle design commenced in 2000, built on the preliminary concept contributed by Italdesign (previously known as Italdesign Giugiaro), and was eventually completed by Lamborghini’s design team under Luc Donckerwolke. Donckerwolke was also responsible for the 2001-launched Murciélago. The design drew inspiration from aviation, incorporating a cab-forward design, acute angles, and intricate handling of flat surfaces from contemporary jet fighter design.

In the following years, multiple variants were introduced, including the lightweight Superleggera, open-top Spyder, and even a GT3 race car. Lamborghini’s motorsports involvement was quite restricted before these.

While all these factors were indeed noteworthy, the Gallardo’s distinguishing quality at the time of its introduction was the combination of high performance, user-friendliness, reliability, and everyday practicality. These attributes allowed many owners to use it as a daily drive, a feature not commonly found in supercars of the time.
