Donckerwolke was also responsible for the 2001-launched Murciélago. The design drew inspiration from aviation, incorporating a cab-forward design, acute angles, and intricate handling of flat surfaces from contemporary jet fighter design.

In the following years, multiple variants were introduced, including the lightweight Superleggera, open-top Spyder, and even a GT3 race car. Lamborghini’s motorsports involvement was quite restricted before these.
