Ford recently introduced an electric car called the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 and it’s really fast! It can set a nationally recognized record for traveling a quarter-mile in 8.128 seconds at 171.97 mph.
Ford is trying to break that record with their even faster electric car, the Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800 which they launched this Thursday.
The new drag racer is based on the same design as the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400. It has four electric motors placed at the back, and each one of them comes with its own system to change electricity into power.
Ford didn’t say if the new car has more power or not. But they did tell us that it has a new transmission and the battery is lighter compared to before. We think it might have 1,800 horsepower or even more! The back end also got better with improved suspension geometry plus bigger tires from Mickey Thompson.
Ford collaborated with MLe Racecar (a company which focuses on electric-powered vehicles) to create the Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800. The co-founder and test driver of MLe, Pat McCue, will be the one driving it when they try to set new records. These records will include the fastest 0-60 mph run in an EV, as well as the fastest 0-60 mph time in an EV with two-wheel drive.
Ford is trying to find ways to put electric power into drag racing, and they’re talking with the NHRA organizers about it. Ford’s previous Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 car showed us what an electric racecar could do, so it’s not too far away!
Chevy tried this in 2019 too with their eCOPO Camaro. It was able to go nine seconds around the track, but there was more untapped potential in that car.
