AlphaTauri confirmed on Tuesday that Daniel Ricciardo will take over the wheel for the rest of the 2023 Formula 1 World Championship.

Ricciardo, a multiple race victor, will step in for current AlphaTauri driver, Nyck De Vries. Despite showing early promise, De Vries has struggled to find his footing in this season.

Hyundai Kona Brief

Ricciardo’s history in the sport includes a stint with the Red Bull Racing feeder team, Toro Rosso, before it became AlphaTauri. He later moved to Red Bull, where he still serves as a reserve driver. Ricciardo’s transfer to AlphaTauri is understood to be a temporary assignment from Red Bull.

The team’s announcement came shortly after Ricciardo tested the Red Bull RB19 on Pirelli tires at Silverstone. He will make his debut for AlphaTauri in the upcoming Hungarian Grand Prix, where he will team up with Yuki Tsunoda.

Ricciardo first joined Toro Rosso in 2012, staying for two seasons before being promoted to Red Bull in 2014. He achieved seven victories with Red Bull before transferring to Renault (now Alpine) for the 2019 season. He later spent two seasons with the French outfit before joining McLaren in 2021.

Although he managed to secure a victory with McLaren, Ricciardo experienced a challenging period with the team. His contract ended prematurely, leaving him without a racing seat for the 2022 season’s conclusion. With no other alternatives, he resumed his career at Red Bull as a reserve driver, while McLaren signed Oscar Piastri as his successor.

De Vries, a Dutch driver and Formula E champion, scored a ninth-place finish in his inaugural F1 race, a one-time opportunity with Williams in 2022. After failing to secure any points in the first 10 races of the season, De Vries finds himself replaced. AlphaTauri has struggled this season, currently holding the last position in the Constructors’ Championship, with Tsunoda having scored just two points.

Disappointing season for AlphaTauri, just two points. They really need a boost. Daniel might just be the answer, who knows!
