2023 Formula 1 Standings: Anticipation Builds for Additional Record-Breaking Performances

Following his recent victory at the Qatar Grand Prix, Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing has secured his third consecutive Formula 1 World Championship.

Moreover, with his triumph at the most recent United States Grand Prix, Verstappen has now accumulated 50 career wins. This places him fifth on the all-time list of F1 drivers with the most wins, trailing only Alain Prost with 51, Sebastian Vettel with 53, Michael Schumacher with 91, and Lewis Hamilton with 103. Given that Verstappen is only 26 years of age, he has ample opportunity to ascend these historic ranks.

This season has been particularly noteworthy for Verstappen, who has claimed victories in 15 out of the 18 races that have taken place. He also set a new Formula 1 record by winning 10 consecutive races, surpassing the previous record of nine set by Sebastian Vettel in 2013, who was also representing Red Bull Racing at the time. With four more races yet to be conducted this season, Verstappen is well-positioned to exceed his own record of 15 wins in a single season, established the previous year.

Red Bull Racing’s dominant performance has not been solely due to Verstappen. The team also secured the 2023 Constructors’ title, finalized following the Japanese Grand Prix in September. Verstappen’s teammate, Sergio Perez, has offered a less consistent but nonetheless vital contribution, maintaining his second-place standing in the drivers’ rankings. Despite early promise, including two race wins, Perez has been plagued by several missteps during the qualifying rounds, often compelling him to start from unfavorable grid positions.

In a season filled with surprises, Aston Martin emerged as a notable contender, thanks in part to the efforts of star driver Fernando Alonso. He has claimed podium finishes in six races, including second place in Monaco and the Netherlands.

McLaren has also displayed a marked improvement, especially following a series of upgrades to its cars. After a lackluster first half of the season, drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have been consistently near the front of the pack in recent races, with multiple podium finishes to their names. Piastri, a rookie, has particularly distinguished himself, earning 83 points and outperforming more seasoned drivers such as Pierre Gasly of Alpine and Valtteri Bottas of Alfa Romeo.

For those monitoring the rookie performances, Piastri stands out as the most successful. Trailing him are Logan Sargeant of Williams and Nyck de Vries of AlphaTauri, the latter of whom was replaced in July by Daniel Ricciardo. Ricciardo, who had to withdraw from several races due to a wrist injury incurred during a practice session, made his return at the United States Grand Prix.
