Introducing the 2024 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition: Ready to Conquer the Trails with 35-Inch Tires

GMC has given the Canyon a complete redesign for 2023, and now for 2024, they are introducing the Canyon AT4X AEV Edition, a mid-size pickup truck built specifically for avid off-roaders.

While GMC’s Sierra 1500 and Sierra HD models already offer the AT4X AEV treatment, this is the first time the Canyon is receiving it.

Overview of the 2024 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition

As the name implies, the 2024 Canyon AT4X AEV Edition is based on the already capable Canyon AT4X but comes with several enhancements developed in collaboration with American Expedition Vehicles (AEV), a company specializing in off-road equipment.

Similar to its corporate relative, the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison, the Canyon AT4X AEV Edition benefits from additional underbody protection and a redesigned front bumper equipped with winch capability. The rear bumper also features removable corners, allowing for easy replacement when tackling rugged trails.

The pickup truck boasts underbody protection in the form of hot-stamped boron-steel skid plates that safeguard crucial components such as the radiator, steering gear, transmission and transfer case, fuel tank, and rear differential.

To enhance its off-road capability, the Canyon AT4X AEV Edition sports flared wheel arches designed to accommodate chunky 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires. These tires wrap around AEV’s 17-inch beadlock-capable Salta wheels.

Thanks to the new tires and a 4.5-inch factory lift kit, the ground clearance is increased to 12.2 inches, which is 1.5 inches higher than the Canyon AT4X equipped with 33-inch tires. As a result, the Canyon AT4X AEV Edition boasts impressive approach, breakover, and departure angles of 38.2, 26.9, and 26.0 degrees, respectively.

Unchanged in the powertrain department, the Canyon AT4X AEV Edition retains its 2.7-liter turbo-4 engine producing 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. This engine is standard across the Canyon lineup and comes paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, delivering power to all four wheels.

Availability and Additional Features

The Canyon AT4X AEV Edition will be available for ordering later this year, with pricing details to be announced closer to the market launch.

For the 2024 model year, both the Canyon AT4X and the AT4X AEV Edition come equipped with a new launch control function while in Baja drive mode. This launch control system is capable of analyzing surface conditions and adjusting engine speed and torque to optimize traction, resulting in improved acceleration, according to GMC.

Furthermore, all 2024 Canyons will adopt General Motors’ Ultifi software platform, enabling over-the-air updates to enhance their functionalities.

The production of the Canyon takes place at a GM facility located in Wentzville, Missouri.
