Spy shots and video of the 2024 BMW 4-Series have emerged, revealing that BMW is working on a facelift for the lineup. The latest prototype of the regular coupe was captured during track testing at the Nürburgring. From the images, it appears that the upcoming model will feature refreshed front and rear ends, as well as an updated interior design, possibly incorporating new interior technology.

Unlike the previous complete redesign of the 4-Series in 2021, this time BMW is planning a milder mid-cycle update. The spy shots show camouflage covering the front and rear ends, with particular attention given to the headlights, taillights, and rear diffuser. The daytime running lights are expected to have a more angular shape with vertical elements integrated into the headlights, while the rear diffuser is anticipated to be more pronounced.

However, one element that remains unchanged and continues to spark controversy are the massive kidney grilles.

During the car’s parked moments, BMW engineers and test drivers made sure to keep the dashboard covered, preventing our spy photographer from capturing it. Nonetheless, it is expected that the latest BMW iDrive infotainment system, version 9.0, set to launch in November, will be paired with a digital gauge cluster. These components will be placed under a single curved screen atop the dashboard. The overall design aims to minimize buttons, possibly leaving only a volume knob.

Regarding performance, the base models are likely to retain the 2.0-liter turbo-4 engine, delivering approximately 255 horsepower and 294 lb-ft of torque. The more powerful M440i models will continue to feature a 3.0-liter turbo-6 engine paired with a mild-hybrid system, offering approximately 382 horsepower and 364 lb-ft of torque. The mild-hybrid system incorporates an integrated starter motor and generator that recovers energy during braking.

An executive from BMW M has already confirmed that both the dual-clutch automatic and manual transmissions will be discontinued in the 4-Series lineup, including M-specific models. As a result, the current 4-Series is exclusively equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission, and this configuration will persist in the upcoming refresh.

Furthermore, as BMW updates the entire 4-Series lineup, the electric i4, 4-Series Gran Coupe, 4-Series convertible, and M4 models will also receive the subsequent facelift.
