Test models of Porsche’s forthcoming electric variant of the Macan have once again been observed, this time disclosing several novel design features destined for the final production model.

The prospect of an electric Macan has been subtly teased by Porsche for several years, with an official confirmation finally arriving in early 2021. Scheduled for release in early 2024, it is anticipated that the vehicle will debut as a 2024 model in the U.S. market.

This launch timeline represents a delay of one year compared to earlier expectations and situates the electric Macan’s release behind that of a related Audi vehicle, named the Q6 E-Tron, which is anticipated to be unveiled later in the current year. Both vehicles will utilize a new Premium Platform Electric (PPE) modular architecture, collaboratively developed by Porsche and Audi. This platform will serve as the basis for multiple models across the Volkswagen Group.

The design cues in the test models for the electric Macan seem to resonate with a clay prototype featured a few years ago in the “Porsche Unseen” publication. A notable design feature includes rectangular headlights akin to those on the Taycan. The latest prototypes also exhibit a divided headlight formation, with additional lights positioned lower in the front fascia.

According to observations from our photographer, an inconspicuous rear spoiler emerges from the tailgate at speeds exceeding 30 mph. The presence of exhaust tips in some earlier photographs should not be misleading; these are merely decoy units intended to mask the vehicle’s true identity, similar to prototypes of the Porsche Taycan.

To expedite the development of the electric Macan, Porsche is employing a combination of real-world and simulated testing, focusing specifically on aerodynamics, energy efficiency, user interface, and acoustic properties. The overarching development objective is to establish the electric Macan as the most dynamic offering in its segment, facilitated by an advanced all-wheel-drive system.

One distinct edge the electric Macan is expected to have over most competitors is its 800-volt electric architecture, which will enable swift charging times. Preliminary information from Porsche suggests that a 60-mile range could be added in just four minutes using a 350-kw charging station. Charging capabilities up to 450-kw have also been demonstrated, though such infrastructure is virtually nonexistent in the U.S.

The electric Macan is slated to feature at least one variant equipped with a 98-kwh battery pack and an electric motor for each axle, boasting a peak output exceeding 603 horsepower.

Manufacturing for the electric Macan will be conducted at Porsche’s facility in Leipzig, Germany, where the existing combustion engine model is also produced. It is worth noting that Porsche has updated the gas-powered Macan for the 2022 model year and intends to offer it in parallel with the electric variant for a transitional period, as electric charging networks continue to expand. Ultimately, only the electric version will remain on the market.

In line with broader corporate strategy, Porsche aims for electric vehicles to constitute more than 80% of its total sales by 2030, retaining only the 911 model with an internal combustion engine. Following the launch of the electric Macan, the automaker plans to introduce electric versions of the 718 sports car, Cayenne mid-size SUV, and eventually a new flagship SUV. Another generation of the gas-powered Panamera is also in the pipeline before it transitions to an electric platform.
