Rivian Files Patent for Tailgate Design with Gooseneck Hinges

Rivian has recently submitted a patent application for a tailgate design reminiscent of the original concept version found in their R1T electric pickup truck.

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) published the application on May 30, 2023, originally filed on January 7, 2022. The patent pertains to a tailgate equipped with gooseneck hinges, enabling it to swing down a full 180 degrees, in addition to the standard 90-degree range seen in traditional tailgates.

Rivian R1T Overview

The Rivian R1T concept, showcased at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show, featured a similar tailgate hinge design. However, these hinges were not implemented in the production version, and Rivian never explicitly stated the reason. It is speculated that cost or durability concerns might have played a role in the decision.

The patent application also mentions the inclusion of hands-free opening for the tailgate and a “zero gravity” function that utilizes air springs to hold the tailgate open at a specific angle. In 2022, Rivian also filed patent applications for telescoping and folding tailgates, as well as an integrated tailgate step.

It is important to note that while these ideas are featured in the patent material, their implementation in actual production vehicles is not guaranteed. However, advanced tailgate features have become increasingly common in conventional pickup trucks, and General Motors is reviving its midgate concept for electric trucks, such as the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV. Rivian’s designs detailed in these patent applications could serve to keep them competitive with rival manufacturers.

Rivian recently provided a glimpse of their upcoming R2 electric SUV, set to commence production in 2026 at a newly established factory in Georgia. Although the company has not officially confirmed a pickup truck companion, it is possible that if such a vehicle does enter production, it may incorporate some of the innovative ideas outlined in these patents.
