Volkswagen Unveils Third-Generation Tiguan for International Markets

On Tuesday, Volkswagen disclosed details about its revamped Tiguan, specifically designed for markets other than the United States.

Contrary to the Tiguan variant currently available in the U.S., this redesigned model comes with a shorter wheelbase and will not be offered for sale domestically. Volkswagen announced that a distinct compact crossover model will be released next year as the updated U.S. version of the Tiguan. This new model is speculated to share design elements with an updated version of the Tayron, which is available in the Chinese market. Additionally, industry rumors suggest that the redesigned Tiguan will be available in both conventional and coupe-like body designs.

Overview of the New Volkswagen Tiguan

Volkswagen has verified that the U.S-bound Tiguan will utilize the same revised MQB platform as the international version, implying that some of the advanced features present in the global Tiguan might also be included in the American model.

The third-generation global Tiguan has been extended by approximately 1.2 inches compared to its predecessor, resulting in an overall length of 178.7 inches. The majority of this added length has been allocated to enhance cargo capacity, which has increased by 1.2 cubic feet, amounting to a total of 22.9 cubic feet (measured up to the height of the rear seat backrests).

Design and Features of the Global Volkswagen Tiguan

In terms of exterior styling, the new global Tiguan appears more robust, particularly when equipped with the optional R-Line package. A rear light strip further accentuates the vehicle’s width. Wheel options for this model extend up to a diameter of 20 inches.

The newly designed global Tiguan is replete with high-end technological amenities. Among the standard and optional features are high-definition matrix LED headlights, a 15-inch infotainment display, a rotary drive mode selector featuring its own mini-screen, a noise suppression package, automated parking assistance with remote functionalities, and front seats equipped with both heating and ventilation options, as well as a massage function. Traditional buttons have also made a comeback, superseding the touch-sensitive controls of the previous model.

One notable enhancement is the adaptive suspension system equipped with dual-valve shock absorbers, regulated by the same vehicle dynamics management system featured in the Golf GTI. This system not only manages the shock absorbers but also administers the vehicle’s electronic differential locks and braking mechanisms to augment handling capabilities.

Powertrain Options and Sales Timeline

The engine options for this international version span diesel, mild-hybrid, and plug-in hybrid configurations. The premium selection is a plug-in hybrid model that yields 268 horsepower and offers a limited electric range, courtesy of a 19.7-kWh battery.

The global Tiguan is slated to commence sales in the early part of 2024. Likewise, the U.S. variant of the Tiguan is anticipated to hit the market in 2024 and is expected to be classified as a 2025 model.

Volkswagen is reportedly also in the development phase of an electric compact crossover, which may bear the ID.Tiguan label.
