The Yas Marina Circuit witnessed the finale of the 2023 Formula 1 World Championship with the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday.

Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing, who clinched the championship title earlier in October at the Qatar Grand Prix, showcased unwavering dominance in Sunday’s race. He secured a comfortable victory, leading Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc by 18 seconds. George Russell of Mercedes-Benz AMG claimed the third spot, trailing over 20 seconds behind Verstappen.

Despite crossing the finish line second, Red Bull’s Sergio Perez was relegated to fourth place following a five-second penalty incurred due to an incident with McLaren’s Lando Norris.

Verstappen’s remarkable season included 19 victories, setting a new record in Formula 1 history. He surpassed his own record of 15 wins from the previous season. Verstappen also established a record for the most consecutive wins within a single season, achieving 10 in a row. His total points for the season reached an unprecedented 575. Similarly, Red Bull Racing achieved a team record with a season total of 860 points.

At the start of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Verstappen and Leclerc led the pack from the pole and second positions, respectively. Verstappen overtook Leclerc in the first turn, while McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Norris vied for positions just behind them.

In the latter part of the race, Verstappen led comfortably, followed by Leclerc and Russell. Perez overtook Russell but failed to secure a five-second margin over him, crucial for Ferrari to surpass Mercedes in the Constructors’ Championship standings. Ultimately, Russell maintained his third position, contributing vital points to Mercedes.

The season concluded with Verstappen leading the Drivers’ Championship with 575 points, followed by teammate Perez with 285 points, and Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton with 234 points. In the Constructors’ Championship, Red Bull topped the standings with 860 points, while Mercedes and Ferrari finished second and third with 409 and 406 points, respectively.

The teams will remain in Abu Dhabi for final tests before the off-season break begins.
