Honda Unveils 2024 Prologue with EPA-estimated 300-mile Range and a Price Point Under $50,000

On Thursday, Honda released preliminary information about its forthcoming 2024 Prologue, a mid-size electric crossover. The vehicle is slated to offer an impressive Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) range estimate of up to 300 miles.

The vehicle is set to go on sale in the early part of 2024, with a starting price set under the $50,000 mark.

With these specifications, Honda appears to have developed a compelling electric vehicle (EV) offering, especially after several years of setbacks with its Clarity range of electrified cars. This advancement is largely attributed to a partnership with General Motors, which has provided its Ultium EV platform and associated battery technology for the Prologue.

In addition, General Motors will manufacture the Prologue for Honda at a North American facility, thus qualifying the vehicle for EV tax incentives. This arrangement mirrors the existing collaboration between General Motors and Acura for the production of the 2024 ZDX electric crossover.

Honda plans to eventually transition to in-house development of electric vehicles for the U.S. market. The first vehicle, projected for a 2025 release, is expected to be a mid- to large-size electric vehicle based on Honda’s forthcoming e:Architecture platform. The vehicle is suspected to be a crossover and is likely to be produced in Ohio, where Honda is enhancing its manufacturing capabilities to accommodate EV production.

Battery and Performance Specifications

The Prologue will come equipped with an 85-kWh battery, allowing for DC fast-charging capabilities at rates up to 155 kW. This is sufficient to replenish 65 miles of driving range within approximately 10 minutes.

Potential buyers will have the option to select between a single-motor front-wheel drive and a dual-motor all-wheel drive. While performance details for the single-motor version remain undisclosed, the dual-motor configuration is expected to deliver 288 horsepower.

Dimensions and Interior Features

The vehicle’s length and wheelbase measure 192 inches and 121.8 inches respectively, dimensions comparable to the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV, another vehicle based on the Ultium platform. The Acura ZDX is nearly six inches longer in comparison.

The interior of the 2024 Honda Prologue features a two-row, five-seat layout and offers 25.2 cubic feet of cargo space. This expands to 57.7 cubic feet when the rear seats are folded. The dashboard includes an 11-inch digital instrument panel and an 11.3-inch infotainment display as standard features. The infotainment system integrates Google Built-In, although the vehicle will also support Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay.

Public Debut and Honda’s EV Strategy

The Prologue is scheduled for its public unveiling at the 2023 Tokyo Auto Show next month, where Honda will also showcase an electric sports car concept. The automaker aims to introduce 30 electric vehicles to its global product line by 2030 and is committed to transitioning its entire vehicle fleet to zero-emission status by 2040.
