In recent sightings, BMW has been actively testing an electric compact crossover believed to be a part of its highly anticipated Neue Klasse EV family. This forthcoming line of vehicles, aptly named “New Class” in German, is set to ride on a cutting-edge EV platform promising enhanced power and efficiency. Notably, the batteries will adopt a novel cylindrical cell design, a departure from the current prismatic cell design. These advancements, combined with other improvements, are projected to yield a remarkable 30% increase in range compared to BMW’s existing battery technology.

The inaugural Neue Klasse EV is slated to make its debut in 2025, likely entering the U.S. market as a 2026 model. Positioned within the same segment as the 3-Series, this first entry is expected to be a sedan and may carry the i3 badge, a nameplate already utilized for an electric version of the current 3-Series sedan, exclusively available in China.

Subsequently, a crossover model, which seems to be the one undergoing testing at present, is anticipated to follow suit. This crossover is also likely to be introduced as a 2026 model in the U.S. and could bear the iX3 designation, mirroring its size similarity to the soon-to-be-revamped X3. An electric variant of the current X3 is already marketed overseas as the iX3, making it plausible that the Neue Klasse version will assume its successor’s role.

Following these initial releases, four more Neue Klasse EVs are slated to follow in relatively quick succession. These subsequent models are expected to take various forms, potentially including wagon or coupe-like crossovers, although they are likely to be derived from the foundational sedan and crossover models.

In a marked departure from BMW’s current EV lineup, the Neue Klasse vehicles will boast distinctive styling to set them apart from the brand’s gas-powered offerings. This aesthetic direction was previewed by BMW’s Vision Neue Klasse concept, which made its debut at the 2023 Munich auto show and closely resembles the initial sedan model.

While the crossover prototype appears to have slightly softened edges compared to the concept, key design elements such as the front fender lines and headlights integrated with a broad grille seem to have been faithfully carried over to the production model. BMW has stated that Neue Klasse vehicles will feature altered proportions, primarily for enhanced aerodynamics and increased interior space.

Although interior visuals are currently unavailable, BMW has made promising commitments. These include expansive head-up displays extending across the windshield and a range of automated driver-assist features, potentially reaching Level 3 on the SAE scale of self-driving capability. Level 3 signifies a vehicle capable of hands-off, eyes-off operation under specific conditions, with the driver remaining ready to assume control promptly if necessary.

Production of the first Neue Klasse EV is scheduled to commence at a facility under construction in Debrecen, Hungary, starting in 2025. Furthermore, Neue Klasse EVs are expected to roll off assembly lines at existing BMW plants in Germany and China, commencing in 2026, and in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, starting in 2027.
