Late last Friday, Mercedes-Benz unveiled a revamped AMG GT, featuring it as part of their 2023 Monterey Car Week display.

This second-generation sports car is named the AMG GT Coupe, distinguishing it from the basic AMG GT. The new model has slightly increased in size compared to its predecessor, making room for Mercedes to incorporate 2+2 seating (compared to the two-seater previous GT) and additional space for luggage.

Jaguar F-Type synopsis

The vehicle is expected to hit showrooms in the first six months of 2024, as a model for that year. Pricing specifics will be made public closer to the actual launch date.

The design of the GT Coupe, while not unexpected, mirrors the appearance of the redesigned SL-Class convertible that was introduced for the 2022 model year. Unique lighting and front-end design features help to differentiate the two. Both are constructed on the identical AMG-developed framework, with the SL-Class effectively taking on the role previously played by the AMG GT Roadster.

Initially, the GT Coupe will be available in GT 55 and GT 63 versions, aligning with the current grades offered for the SL. Both these grades come equipped with a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine, capable of delivering 469 hp in the GT 55 and 577 hp in the GT 63. Standard all-wheel drive and a 9-speed automatic transmission form the rest of the drivetrain package for both versions.

The vehicle’s redesign likely lends it a softer feel, but performance has not been compromised. The GT 63 can accelerate to 60 mph from a standstill in just 3.1 seconds, and can achieve a restricted top speed of 196 mph. The GT 55 is not far behind, with a 0-60 mph time of 3.8 seconds and a top speed of 183 mph.

The car also includes other performance enhancements such as adjustable suspension with active roll stabilization, electronically controlled limited-slip differential, and rear-wheel steering. A data logger is integrated for track performance assessment, and the drive mode selector provides six options, including Sport, Sport+, and Race.

The interior closely resembles that of the SL, equipped with heated and cooled power-adjustable seats, an AMG Performance steering wheel, a 12.3-inch digital dashboard, and an 11.9-inch infotainment display with tilt functionality to minimize glare. An optional head-up display is also available.

Despite the addition of rear seats, Mercedes has noted that they are best suited for individuals under five feet tall, effectively excluding most adult passengers.

More variants are expected to join the GT lineup soon, including potential plug-in hybrid versions. The most powerful option is likely to be the GT 63 S E Performance grade, possibly boasting over 800 hp.

Furthermore, Mercedes might release specialized limited-edition models as part of its new Mythos series. This includes a one-of-a-kind SL speedster and a Maybach SL, along with a just-revealed SL 63 Manufaktur Big Sur special edition in Monterey.
