BMW is currently in the process of revamping its X2 compact crossover, and the new line-up will notably include an electric variant, the iX2.
Gas-powered X2 prototypes have been sighted for more than a year now, but this is the inaugural glimpse of the electric iX2 test vehicle.
BMW officially announced the iX2 back in March, and the recent video of a spy prototype, void of any engine noise, confirms that the electric version of the forthcoming second-generation X2 is indeed under testing.
The reveal of the iX2 doesn’t come as a big shock, given the redesigned X2’s close ties to the redesigned X1, which was introduced in 2023 and also boasts its own electric version, the iX1. These vehicles are built on the BMW Group’s FAAR platform, specifically engineered for compact cars and crossovers, and has the capability to support gas, plug-in hybrid, and electric powertrains.
The iX2 is expected to mirror the iX1 in terms of specifications, likely featuring a 64.7-kwh battery and a dual-motor powertrain that delivers 308 hp. There’s also a possibility for a single-motor configuration in the future.
BMW projects the iX1 to have a range of 250 miles, and a similar estimate can be expected for the iX2.
As of now, BMW hasn’t confirmed any plans to introduce the iX1 or iX2 models in the U.S. market.
The redesigned X2 is slated for a reveal later this year, potentially as a 2024 model, though a 2025 release could also be on the cards. The iX2 is set to be unveiled concurrently with its gas-powered counterpart.
