Regular Apple CarPlay users are quite familiar with the inconvenience of needing to leave CarPlay’s interface to adjust various car functions, only to have to toggle back when they wish to resume using apps from their linked iPhone.
This lack of smooth integration was cited by General Motors in April as one reason for its decision to gradually replace CarPlay with a Google-based infotainment system that incorporates many popular Google apps.
Porsche, however, has ingeniously sidestepped this problem. This week, the car manufacturer revealed an updated My Porsche app for iPhones, designed to function within the CarPlay interface.
The 2024 Cayenne, set to hit showrooms later this year, will be the first model to feature this capability. Over time, it will be extended to other model lines. Linking the app to the car is as easy as scanning a QR code shown on the car’s infotainment system.
Users will be able to adjust numerous settings via the CarPlay interface, such as audio configurations, radio stations, climate controls, and ambient lighting. For electric vehicles, the CarPlay interface will also display the battery’s state of charge.
CarPlay’s quick actions can be used to combine some functions, like a warm-up function that activates the heater and seat warmers. Apple’s Siri voice assistant will be invaluable for drivers wishing to stay focused on the road.
Porsche plans to incorporate additional functions in future updates.
Apple also has plans to roll out a next-generation CarPlay that will have broader control over the dashboard. In a presentation the previous summer, Apple gave a glimpse of the new system, showing that it will be able to control not just the infotainment system, but the instrument cluster as well.
