Jay Leno Explores the Ferrari 296 GTB

Renowned Ferrari enthusiast David Lee recently made a return appearance on Jay Leno’s Garage, showcasing one of Ferrari’s newest masterpieces, the 296 GTB supercar.

Introduced in 2021, the 296 GTB coupe serves as Ferrari’s entry-level mid-engine vehicle. In 2022, it was joined by the 296 GTS convertible variant.

Lee possesses one of the initial 296 GTBs in the country—a breathtaking example painted in Giallo Modena and adorned with elegant silver accents, including sleek racing stripes. These stripes are part of the optional Assetto Fiorano package, which sheds approximately 33 pounds through lighter door panels, various carbon-fiber components, and a Lexan rear windscreen. Additionally, this package incorporates adjustable Multimatic shocks, extra aerodynamic features, and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires.

However, it’s important to note that this package does not provide any additional power. Each 296 model derives its propulsion from a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine coupled with an electric motor, situated between the engine and an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The combined output reaches an impressive 818 horsepower, and the power is transmitted solely to the rear wheels. Ferrari claims a 0-62 mph acceleration time of 2.9 seconds and a top speed exceeding 205 mph. Moreover, a 7.45-kilowatt-hour battery enables a modest electric driving range.

Both Leno and Lee express admiration for the compact size of the 296 in comparison to Ferrari’s other mid-engine offering, the SF90. In the video, Lee describes the SF90 as occupying an entire lane, particularly noticeable on narrow roads found in Ferrari’s Italian homeland. Both Leno and Lee unanimously agree that the 296 stands out as one of the most thrilling Ferraris to drive among the current lineup.

The 296 series serves as a direct successor to the F8 models, which trace their origins back to the 458 Italia, launched over a decade ago. While production of the F8 Tributo has concluded, the F8 Spider continues to be assembled but will soon bid farewell. Consequently, Ferrari’s mid-engine range will no longer exclude electrification.

Furthermore, Ferrari has introduced the 296 GT3 race car, replacing the 488 GT3. It competes in prestigious events like the IMSA SportsCar Championship and SRO Endurance Cup.
