Eccentrica Introduces Lamborghini Diablo Restomod as Its Inaugural Project

Eccentrica Cars, an Italian startup, recently unveiled an exciting restomod venture centered around the iconic Lamborghini Diablo.

The mastermind behind this project is Emanuel Colombini, the head of Colombini furniture company and an ardent Lamborghini enthusiast. Besides amassing a remarkable collection of Lamborghini vehicles, Colombini actively participates in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo one-make racing series.

Colombini’s newly established company, Eccentrica, aims to establish itself as a leading force in the restomod industry, and the Diablo project serves as an enticing preview of things to come. His vision for the car was to create a contemporary aesthetic while enhancing its performance, while still preserving the Diablo’s distinctive qualities, particularly its analog character.

“Ever since I laid eyes on the red Diablo in the inaugural issue of Quattroruote magazine as a child, it was love at first sight,” expressed Colombini. “Later, after experiencing the GT version firsthand, I decided to pay homage to it by conceiving a restomod company centered around this project.”

The transformation performed on the vehicle is extensive. Beginning with the stripping down of the donor Diablo to its steel tubular chassis, significant reinforcements were made to enhance strength and rigidity. Additionally, a new body was crafted, rendering the car wider and more imposing. This redesign not only improves aesthetics but also increases the track width, effectively reducing the vehicle’s tendency to understeer.

While modern composite materials were utilized, traditional coach-building techniques involving aluminum hammering and rolling were also employed. The iconic pop-up headlights have been replaced with contemporary LED units that are revealed through a fold-down mechanism, and substantial renovations were made to the rear section. The rear focal point features central tips from a Capristo exhaust system.

The enhancements to the powertrain go beyond the exhaust system. Retained behind the cabin is the original 5.7-liter V-12 engine found in earlier Diablo models (later versions were upgraded to a 6.0-liter engine), but it has been equipped with new valves and camshafts, resulting in an output boost to 550 hp, up from the stock 485 hp.

Development is ongoing, but Eccentrica estimates impressive performance figures, including a 0-62 mph acceleration time of 3.5 seconds, a top speed of 208 mph, and lateral acceleration of up to 1.2 g.

Additional modifications encompass 19-inch wheels paired with Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires, as well as modern Brembo brakes featuring six-piston calipers. The updated braking system allows the car to halt from 62 mph in just 111 feet, a reduction of 23 feet compared to the original configuration.

The meticulous attention to detail applied to the exterior and powertrain is mirrored in the interior. The designers aimed to combine the original, almost minimalist cabin design with high-quality materials, along with displays and switchgear reminiscent of those found in vintage fighter jets. The analog gauges have been replaced by displays featuring pixelated graphics. Trim materials include Alcantara, carbon fiber, and leather. The steering column incorporates carbon fiber as a nod to the original Diablo GTR, according to Eccentrica.

Behind the seats, a storage area is available to accommodate custom suitcases that Eccentrica can provide upon request. On either side of the cabin’s rear, small metal hooks are available to hang jackets or bags.

The Diablo restomod is not merely a one-off project. Eccentrica plans to produce a limited run of no more than 19 units, with the showcased prototype serving as the first example.

The pricing for this conversion starts at 1.2 million euros (approximately $1.3 million), excluding the cost of the donor Diablo. The entire process is expected to take between 16 and 18 months, depending on the specific customization requests.

The prototype will be formally unveiled next week at the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed in the U.K., followed by a U.S. tour that commences with an appearance at the 2023 Monterey Car Week in mid-August.
