2026 Audi RS 7 Sportback Prototype

Audi has commenced road trials for the forthcoming A7 Sportback, and early-stage prototypes suggestive of the high-performance RS 7 version have been noticed.

Such prototypes, known as test mules, typically utilize makeshift bodies borrowed from pre-existing models to camouflage new mechanical elements. For this particular test mule, Audi’s engineers have adopted the modified body of an S6 sedan.

Audi S7 and RS 7 Insights

The initial prototypes donning the finalized body intended for the next RS 7 are expected to make an appearance within the coming 6-12 months.

The test mule showcases a front fascia design with substantial intakes, borrowed from the current RS 6 and RS 7. It also features widened wheel arches and a newly-designed exhaust system with tips positioned towards the rear fascia’s center. Industry insiders report that the redesigned exhaust is slated for future RS models that retain a gas engine.

The existing RS 6 and RS 7’s front fascia presumably offers ample cooling for the powertrain, while the expanded wheel arches hint at the broad track planned for the forthcoming RS 7.

There’s no concrete information yet about the powertrain to be used in the next RS 7, but it’s likely to incorporate plug-in hybrid technology. Oliver Hoffman, Audi’s current R&D chief, had earlier stated that plug-in hybrid technology would be a feature in future RS models.

The most probable configuration would blend the current RS 7’s turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine with an electric motor integrated into the transmission. This same configuration is already employed in Porsche’s Cayenne and Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid models, generating close to 700 hp, while the current RS 7’s maximum power output is 621 hp.

Similar to the current model, the upcoming RS 7 will distribute its drive to all four wheels.

The present A7 was launched in 2018 as a 2019 model. This suggests that the succeeding A7 should be launched around 2025, probably as a 2026 model. The S7 and RS 7 performance versions are expected to follow shortly after the regular model.

The future A7 line will be among the final Audis to utilize gas engines, as the automaker has announced that it will exclusively launch electric vehicles post-2026. The transition to electric power for the A6 is set to occur this year itself with the debut of the A6 E-Tron. Testing for these prototypes is also currently underway.
