The Bus is making a comeback in the United States with the arrival of the 2025 VW ID.Buzz.

Volkswagen has unveiled the U.S.-spec version of the 2025 Volkswagen ID.Buzz, featuring three rows of seats, a larger battery pack, and a more powerful electric motor compared to its global counterparts.

Production of the ID.Buzz started last year in Hanover, Germany, but the United States will have to wait until the second half of 2024 to see it on American roads. The anticipated price of around $65,000 may come as a surprise to some buyers.

The 2025 Volkswagen ID.Buzz combines retro and futuristic design elements. Its upright structure, minimal overhangs, and generous glass areas pay homage to the classic Volkswagen Bus. The iconic VW logo takes center stage, accompanied by a horizontal light bar that connects the logo to LED headlights. Sliding doors with power-operated windows adorn the sides, and the rear boasts horizontal taillights connected by a ribbon of LED lights. Nods to the original Bus can be found in the three faux vents on each D-pillar.

Step inside the ID.Buzz, and you’ll find a blend of modern and retro touches. The cabin features a simple, upright dashboard with a 5.3-inch digital gauge cluster. Most vehicle controls are accessed through a 12.9-inch touchscreen, and the touch-based sliders for climate control and radio volume are backlit. Occupants will enjoy heated and cooled 12-way power front seats, while the second row can be configured with either captain’s chairs or a bench seat. The second and third rows can be folded flat, and the third row can even be removed entirely. The ID.Buzz offers ample storage space, including fabric storage bins and a removable front center console. An optional sunroof can replace the metal roof, providing a large opening that can be opaque or translucent.

The U.S. version of the ID.Buzz packs more power and a larger battery than the two-row model available elsewhere. It features a 91-kWh battery pack, a single rear motor delivering 282 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque (compared to 201 hp and 228 lb-ft in the two-row model), and a single-speed transmission. All-wheel-drive dual-motor models will also be available, boasting around 330 hp. The ID.Buzz can charge at a peak rate of 170 kW, allowing for a 10-80% charge in just 25 minutes.

Based on the same MEB electric vehicle platform as the ID.4, the ID.Buzz for the U.S. market is approximately 10 inches longer, primarily due to an extended wheelbase. It measures a little over 16 feet in length and is as wide as the three-row Atlas SUV. Standing at 6.2 feet tall, it surpasses the Atlas by five inches. Despite its boxy shape, the ID.Buzz achieves a low coefficient of drag of just 0.29. Similar to the ID.4, it utilizes struts in the front and a multi-link rear suspension.

Safety features are abundant in the ID.Buzz, with automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitors, and active lane control coming standard. Additionally, automatic park assist and a surround-view camera system will be available.
