Volvo to Gain Access to Tesla Superchargers and Introduce NACS Connector for EVs
In a recent announcement, Volvo joined the ranks of automakers offering its customers access to Tesla’s extensive network of chargers, including over 12,000 high-speed Superchargers.
Volvo revealed on Tuesday that it has struck a deal with Tesla, allowing owners of its electric vehicles to utilize Tesla chargers located across the United States, Mexico, and Canada, starting in the first half of 2024.
To charge at a Tesla station, Volvo owners will require an adapter initially. However, starting in 2025, Volvo plans to incorporate Tesla’s proprietary charging connector, known as the North American Charging Standard (NACS), in its electric vehicles sold in North America. In such cases, owners who wish to use Volvo’s current Combined Charging System (CCS) connector will need an adapter. Notably, Tesla is also introducing support for the CCS connector at some of its charging locations.
Finding Tesla chargers will be convenient for Volvo owners, as they will be able to locate them through the Volvo Cars app. The app not only provides real-time information on charger availability but also enables owners to pay for charging sessions, eliminating the need for separate accounts.
“In our pursuit of becoming fully electric by 2030, we are committed to simplifying life with an electric car,” stated Jim Rowan, CEO of Volvo.
Presently, Volvo’s electric lineup includes the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge compact crossovers. However, the company has plans to introduce the mid-size SUV EX90 and subcompact crossover EX30 for sale in 2024.
Other automakers such as Ford, General Motors, and Rivian have also secured agreements with Tesla for access to their charging network. Additionally, Ford and GM have announced their intentions to adopt the NACS connector for their North American vehicles. Hyundai and Stellantis have expressed similar interests in following suit.
