Limited-Edition Porsche 718 Cayman RS

Last week, at the Rennsport Reunion assembly taking place at the Laguna Seca circuit in California, Porsche unveiled a special edition 718 Cayman RS co-developed with Tag Heuer.

This limited-edition model commemorates the 70th anniversary of the participation of two 550 Coupes in the 1953 Carrera Panamericana race. Only two units of this exclusive car will be manufactured, each one paying tribute to one of the two 550 Coupes that took part in the famed Mexican race. Simultaneously, the car marks the 60th anniversary of the Tag Heuer Carrera Chronograph, a timepiece initially released by the original Heuer company explicitly for motorsports enthusiasts.

The vehicle is officially designated as the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Tag Heuer x Porsche – Legends of Panamericana. The version showcased at Laguna Seca carried the racing number 154, which was also borne by one of the competing 550 Coupes in the historical race. A second vehicle, donning racing number 152, will be revealed at the contemporary iteration of the Carrera Panamericana slated for mid-October of this year.

Porsche has announced that the second unit will be made available through a charitable auction in Mexico, scheduled for early 2024. It remains uncertain whether the first unit will also be offered for sale. Both vehicles were custom-ordered via the Porsche Latin America’s Porsche Sonderwunsch personalization program.

Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS TAG Heuer x Porsche – Legends of Panamericana: Features

Both vehicles are adorned with a Le Mans Silver Metallic paint scheme, applied extensively to various exterior elements including parts constructed of carbon-fiber weave. Racing numbers are artistically applied to the car’s doors and roof. Moreover, Tag Heuer insignias embellish the vehicle’s hood, the side flaps of the rear wing, and the engine’s air filter casing visible through the rear windshield.

The interior features seats upholstered in Guards Red leather, which stand in sharp contrast to the dashboard and door panels, both of which are black. Stitching that mimics the colors of the Mexican flag serves as a tribute to the Carrera Panamericana’s country of origin. Additional interior details include a “GT4 RS Panamericana Special” inscription located on the cupholder panel and the door treadplates. The centerpiece of the interior is a Tag Heuer stopwatch module, strategically placed on the central console.

As for the powertrain, no modifications have been implemented. The vehicle is equipped with a mid-mounted 4.0-liter flat-6 engine, sourced from the previous generation 911 GT3. This engine is capable of revving up to 9,000 rpm and delivering a peak output of 493 horsepower. The power is transmitted to the rear wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

In addition to this, Porsche took the opportunity at the Rennsport Reunion event to also introduce the limited-edition 911 GT3 R Rennsport track vehicle, as well as a unique 944 Safari model that will subsequently be transformed into a Hot Wheels collectible.

No changes in powertrain? I mean, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right? Still, would’ve loved to see some new tech integrated.
