Bugatti Type 57 SC Atlantic inspires one-off Chiron

Bugatti unveiled a bespoke Chiron Super Sport, aptly named the “Chiron Super Sport 57 One of One,” paying homage to the iconic Type 57SC Atlantic. This exclusive creation hails from Bugatti’s Sur Mesure personalization division and was specially commissioned by a discerning client who sought to commemorate a Type 57SC Atlantic she encountered over two decades ago.

The particular Type 57SC Atlantic that served as the muse for this automotive masterpiece dates back to 1936 and was originally crafted for Victor Rothschild. It represents the first of only four such models ever produced and is presently in the possession of Peter Mullin and Rob Walton, following their acquisition at a 2010 auction. Even amidst the turbulence of the global financial crisis, this automotive gem fetched a staggering price of over $30 million.

The Chiron Super Sport 57 One of One incorporates several distinctive elements inspired by the Type 57SC Atlantic. Noteworthy features include a silver-tinted blue paint finish, an updated horseshoe grille adorned with polished vertical lines, and faithful recreations of the original car’s silhouette, found on the underside of the rear wing and within the door linings. Additionally, Bugatti’s emblematic Dancing Elephant motif and the signature of Jean Bugatti, the visionary designer behind the Type 57SC Atlantic, grace the cabin.

Mechanically, the Chiron Super Sport remains consistent with its standard counterpart, drawing power from the Chiron’s quad-turbocharged 8.0-liter W-16 engine. However, the power output has been elevated to an impressive 1,578 hp, surpassing the standard 1,480-hp rating. To complement this enhanced performance, the Chiron Super Sport is equipped with bespoke Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, capable of withstanding speeds of up to 317 mph, thanks to reinforced belts that underwent rigorous testing on a specialized bench originally designed for the Space Shuttle program.

To ensure stability at high velocities, the Chiron Super Sport’s body is elongated compared to the standard Chiron. This design incorporates a lengthened rear section, stretching it by nearly 10 inches to optimize laminar airflow over the bodywork. Additionally, a wide rear diffuser integrates stacked exhaust tips.

It’s important to note that the Chiron Super Sport’s top speed is limited to 273 mph, in contrast to the more extreme Chiron Super Sport 300+, a prototype that achieved an astounding speed of 304.773 mph in 2019.

This Chiron Super Sport 57 One of One follows in the footsteps of Bugatti’s 2019 creation, the La Voiture Noire, which means “The Black Car” in French. This exquisite automobile was inspired by the black Type 57SC Atlantic, which once belonged to Jean Bugatti, although its whereabouts remain a mystery, having disappeared during the onset of the Second World War.
