Mercedes-Benz has introduced the updated GLC-Class compact crossover for the 2023 model year and has recently unveiled two performance variants designed by their AMG division.

These variants, the newest iterations of the AMG GLC 43 and GLC 63 badges, come equipped with electrified 4-cylinder powertrains. The AMG GLC 43 is slated to launch early next year as a 2024 model, followed by the AMG GLC 63, which will be released later as a 2025 model. Pricing details have yet to be disclosed.

The powertrains used in these performance variants match those found in the AMG models based on the C-Class sedan. The GLC 63 additionally boasts the S E Performance label, signifying the inclusion of AMG’s top-tier hybrid technology.

In the GLC 63 S E Performance plug-in hybrid, a remarkable 671 hp is generated from a 2.0-liter turbo-4 with an electric-aided turbocharger and a mild-hybrid system in the front, along with a single electric motor in the rear. This output surpasses the previous GLC 63 S model’s twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 by over 200 hp. This propels the hybrid compact SUV from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds and to a top speed of 171 mph, as reported by Mercedes.

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 63 S E Performance is more than just impressive figures. The powertrain has been designed to optimize power and torque delivery when needed. For example, the rear electric motor provides instant full torque to boost acceleration from a standstill. A 6.1-kwh battery pack enables short-range electric driving. The 400-volt battery, similar to those used in Formula 1, offers high power outputs and quick recharging times, largely due to direct cell cooling.

Driving experience enhancements include a fully adaptable mechanical all-wheel-drive system, rear-wheel steering, and a swift-shifting 9-speed automatic transmission. There is, however, a weight trade-off with this advanced technology. While the exact weight hasn’t been disclosed by Mercedes, it is expected to be more than the 4,654 pounds of the C 63 S E Performance sedan.

The GLC 43 has a more straightforward setup. This compact SUV features the same 2.0-liter turbo-4 and mild-hybrid system found in the C 43 sedan, albeit with a smaller turbocharger compared to the one in the GLC 63 S E Performance.

In the 2024 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 43, the peak output is 416 hp, sent to all four wheels via a 9-speed automatic and a rear-biased all-wheel-drive system. This setup allows for 0-60 mph acceleration in 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph.

Handling for both vehicles is managed by a steel spring suspension with adaptive dampers, speed-sensitive steering, and rear-wheel steering. The GLC 63 S E Performance also comes with standard active roll stabilization. Powerful brake packages provide stopping power, with the GLC 43 using four-piston fixed calipers at the front wheels and the GLC 63 S E Performance using six-piston fixed calipers.

Both vehicles feature distinct grille and fascia designs to distinguish them from the regular GLC-Class lineup. Interior highlights include nappa leather, sporty seats, and AMG-branded pedals and floor mats. AMG-exclusive graphics are also displayed on the digital instrument cluster and infotainment system.

Mercedes is also planning to extend the GLC 43 and GLC 63 S E Performance variants to the latest GLC-Class Coupe, although release dates for these models haven’t been announced. It’s anticipated that they’ll be available as 2025 models.
