The iconic Mercedes-Benz G-Class has been on the market for 40 years and has undergone numerous revisions to maintain its modernity. Following its redesign in the 2019 model year, it seems the vehicle will continue to receive intermittent upgrades much like its antecedent.

The most recent espionage photos indicate that a test version of the revamped G 63 from AMG is in development. Test vehicles for the modified standard G-Class have also been seen, and both versions are slated for a 2025 release in the United States market.

The G 63 prototype was observed with camouflaged equipment, suggesting aerodynamic modifications to the front end, potentially including active grille shutters. While the fundamental contour of the grille is projected to stay consistent, alterations to its pattern are anticipated.

The dashboard was concealed, hinting at interior modifications. A pivotal update is expected to be the incorporation of the newest iteration of Mercedes’ MBUX infotainment system.

Ward’s Auto has reported that the updated G 63 will feature a semi-active hydraulic suspension system comparable to those in the SL convertible and GT Coupe. Rather than traditional anti-roll bars, this hydraulic suspension system will be interconnected at all four corners, allowing for dynamic damping adjustments both laterally and longitudinally. The system will use hydraulic fluid and adapt based on multiple factors including speed, steering angle, road conditions, and vehicle dynamics. A similar technology is employed in McLaren’s line of supercars.

The power unit for the G 63 is a 4.0-liter V-8 engine with twin-turbocharging that produces 577 horsepower. Despite the recent introduction of a plug-in hybrid V-8 powertrain in models like the GT 63 S E Performance 4-Door Coupe and S 63 E Performance, there are no immediate plans to integrate this into the G 63.

Instead, the tuning house in Affalterbach is likely to implement a mild-hybrid system already in use in other 4.0-liter V-8 Mercedes models. This system incorporates an electric motor that provides an intermittent power surge of 21 horsepower. Furthermore, an all-electric version of the G-Class is in the planning stages, potentially under the name EQG, which will feature a four-motor configuration.

Additional Developments

Last year, a 4×4 Squared option, inclusive of portal axles, was introduced to the G 63 lineup in international markets, although its U.S. availability remains unannounced. Unconfirmed reports suggest that Mercedes may phase out the V-8 engine for non-AMG G-Class versions in the forthcoming update, possibly replacing it with an inline-6 and mild-hybrid setup. A G 500 V8 Final Edition was released internationally in June, known in the U.S. as the G 550, but whether this change will affect the U.S. market has not been declared.

Mercedes also announced in September its intention to introduce a compact G-Class model, set for release later this decade, which will employ an electric powertrain.
