2024 Polestar 2: Starting at $51,300, a $1,500 Increase from 2023

On Tuesday, Polestar unveiled the pricing details for the upgraded 2024 Polestar 2, along with the exciting news that deliveries in the United States will commence in August.

The base model of the 2024 Polestar 2, now equipped with a single motor, starts at $51,300 (including a mandatory $1,400 destination charge). This represents a $1,500 increase compared to the starting price of the 2023 model. However, the 2024 Polestar 2 comes with notable enhancements in power and range.

Overview of the Polestar 2:

For the new model year, the single-motor Polestar 2 transitions from front-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive, receiving a boost of 68 hp and 118 lb-ft of torque. It now boasts a power rating of 299 hp and 361 lb-ft of torque, resulting in an estimated 0-60 mph time of 5.9 seconds, according to Polestar estimates. Additionally, the battery pack has been expanded to 82 kWh, providing an estimated range of 320 miles, as compared to the EPA-rated 270 miles of the 2023 model.

The 2024 Polestar 2:

The 2024 Polestar 2, featuring dual-motor all-wheel drive, starts at $56,700. With a rear-biased setup aimed at improving handling, this model can also decouple the front motor for increased efficiency when the situation permits. Power has been increased from the previous 408 hp and 467 lb-ft to 421 hp and 546 lb-ft, resulting in an estimated 0-60 mph time of 4.3 seconds.

The all-wheel-drive models come equipped with a 78 kWh battery pack, offering an estimated range of 276 miles, slightly higher than the 270-mile rating of the 2023 model. These models also support DC fast-charging at 155 kW, the same as before, while the single-motor models can now charge at up to 205 kW.

Polestar has also announced that the 2024 models will come with more standard equipment. Blind-spot monitors, park-assist sensors, a surround-view camera system, and auto-dimming mirrors are now included across all trim levels. Furthermore, the Pilot Pack, which adds adaptive cruise control and other driver aids, is now a standard feature on dual-motor models.

Implications for the Federal Tax Credit:

As the Polestar 2 is assembled in China, it does not qualify for the $7,500 federal tax credit under the new Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) rules. However, Polestar has mentioned in a press release that its vehicles are eligible for the IRA Clean Vehicle Credit. This credit acts as a loophole, enabling automakers with captive finance companies to claim a credit on leased vehicles and pass on the resulting savings to customers.

Future Polestar Models:

Currently, the Polestar 2 stands as the sole model in the lineup. However, it will be joined by the Polestar 3 SUV next year, after experiencing a delay due to software issues. Following closely, the more coupe-like Polestar 4 is also expected to make its debut in the same year. The Polestar 5 sedan and Polestar 6 sports car are projected to launch in 2025 and 2026, respectively. Finally, a mysterious Polestar 7 with an undisclosed body style is set to arrive in 2027.
