The latest iteration of the modern Mini hatchback, now in its fourth generation, has been unveiled as the redesigned 2025 Cooper. After providing a glimpse of its exterior design in April, Mini has now presented a more comprehensive view of the vehicle, both inside and out.

The official debut of the new Cooper is scheduled for the upcoming 2023 Munich auto show. During the event, Mini will also introduce a revamped 2025 Countryman model. Although specific details regarding the commencement of sales in the U.S. have not been disclosed, it is anticipated that both vehicles will likely become available sometime next year.

Noteworthy is the fact that the two-door Cooper has chosen to part ways with the previous model’s “Hardtop” moniker. Furthermore, the latest iterations of this vehicle, both gasoline and electric, are underpinned by distinct platforms. While only the electric variant has been showcased thus far, Mini has crafted the electric model utilizing a dedicated EV platform developed through a collaborative effort between Mini’s parent company, BMW Group, and Great Wall Motors. Conversely, the gasoline iteration is speculated to adopt an updated version of the outgoing model’s platform.

In terms of the electric variants, the initial offerings comprise the Cooper E and Cooper SE models. The Cooper E model incorporates a 40.7-kwh battery pack paired with a single electric motor, yielding a power output of 181 hp. Meanwhile, the Cooper SE model integrates a larger 54.2-kwh battery pack along with a single electric motor, delivering an impressive 215 hp. The Cooper SE model, boasting the larger battery, is projected to achieve a range of approximately 250 miles based on the WLTP test cycle utilized internationally. However, a slightly reduced range is expected when measured against the more rigorous EPA cycle.

Performance-wise, the Cooper E model boasts a 0-62 mph acceleration time of 7.3 seconds, while the Cooper SE variant achieves the same feat in 6.7 seconds. Enthusiasts of high-performance vehicles will be pleased to learn that Mini is in the process of developing an electric John Cooper Works model, although precise timing remains uncertain.

While information regarding the gasoline-powered version remains undisclosed, it is likely that the existing Hardtop’s powertrains, including the 1.5-liter turbo-3 and 2.0-liter turbo-4 engines, will persist, potentially accompanied by modest enhancements in both performance and fuel efficiency.

The exterior design of the revamped Cooper exhibits a more streamlined aesthetic in comparison to its predecessors. Previously observed elements like fender flares and the iconic side scuttles have been removed. However, notable improvements can be seen in the lighting elements on both the front and rear ends. The daytime running lights can be customized to suit individual preferences, allowing for a personalized touch.

Moving to the interior, the dash layout takes a departure from the conventional instrument cluster, relocating crucial driving information to the circular infotainment screen positioned at the center. The arrangement of the dashboard is reminiscent of the original Mini’s interior, conceived by Alec Issigonis.

For drivers seeking essential information directly within their line of sight, a head-up display option will be available. Additionally, buyers will have the opportunity to incorporate textile surfaces onto the dashboard for the first time, alongside sport seats and a panoramic glass roof.

While certain physical controls remain present on the steering wheel and a bar beneath the infotainment screen, the majority of functions can be managed through the infotainment system or voice commands. The circular screen, measuring slightly under 10 inches in diameter, is designed to be as user-friendly as a smartphone.

The new Cooper also encompasses several electronic driver-assist features, which may either be included as standard or offered as optional upgrades. Among these features is a hands-free mode tailored for single-lane highway travel, although drivers are still required to maintain vigilant oversight at all times. Furthermore, an automated park-assist function has been introduced, capable of identifying suitable parking spaces and initiating parking maneuvers.
