For many racing enthusiasts around the world, one name tops the list of all-time great Formula 1 drivers: Fernando Alonso. The two-time Formula 1 champion and member of Aston Martin’s new team is set to make his debut in the championship this year. Ahead of his Nürburgring race debut, Alonso took some time to reflect on his perfect lap.
For all of his success in Formula One, one of Fernando Alonso’s favorite accomplishments has been his perfect laps. In a recent interview with BBC Sport, the three-time Formula One champion discussed his favorite lap of all time–the one that clinched the 2005 World Championship for him and Ferrari.
“I remember this lap, it was in Singapore. It was a very hot race, and I was on pole position. I started the race, and didn’t have great pace, but I had a good strategy. I was conserving fuel, and when I saw my chance I attack. I overtook four cars, and then I saw somebody behind me. I knew he was going to try to pass me, so I defended very well. I did a lap that was very smooth, and I crossed the line first. It was a very satisfying lap.”
Alonso’s perfect lap in Singapore shows off his impressive driving skills, as well as his race strategy. By conserving fuel, he was able to stay ahead of his competition for the entire race, and then capitalize when he had the chance. By defending well, he prevented his opponent from passing, and ultimately won the race.
