Kia Unveils Rugged 2024 Sorento Inspired by Telluride at LA Auto Show

On Thursday, at the 2023 Los Angeles Auto Show, Kia introduced the revamped 2024 Sorento. This midsize SUV, known for its three-row seating, now sports a design heavily influenced by the larger Kia Telluride. Additionally, the lineup now includes the new X-Pro variant, designed for those seeking a more robust vehicle.

2024 Kia Sorento: What’s New

The latest Sorento will hit the market in the first quarter of 2024, initially offering only gasoline engine options. The existing models, available in hybrid (HEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions, will continue to be sold. However, the updated Sorento with these electrified powertrains will make their debut later in 2024 as 2025 models.

For the 2024 edition, the Sorento retains its gas powertrain configurations. The standard offering is a 2.5-liter inline-4 engine with a 191-horsepower output, while an optional 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine delivers 281 horsepower. The base engine is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, whereas the turbocharged version benefits from an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Most models feature front-wheel drive as standard, but all-wheel drive is an option.

Electrified Powertrains

Details about any changes to the electrified powertrains have not been disclosed by Kia. Currently, the Sorento HEV produces 227 horsepower, and the Sorento PHEV generates 261 horsepower, both utilizing a 1.6-liter inline-4 engine as part of their hybrid systems.

The X-Pro Variant

Targeted at enthusiasts of light off-roading, the X-Pro variant boasts 17-inch wheels with BFGoodrich All-Terrain tires, distinctive front and rear fascias, and interior enhancements, including open-pore wood trim. This model is equipped with the turbocharged engine and offers increased towing capacity, rated at up to 4,000 pounds. It also features a center locking differential in its all-wheel-drive system. The X-Line version, less rugged than the X-Pro, includes similar features but opts for 20-inch wheels and standard tires.

Interior and Technology Upgrades

The 2024 Sorento’s interior has undergone a significant redesign. A combined digital gauge cluster (available in 4.3-inch standard and 12.3-inch sizes) and a 12.3-inch infotainment screen dominate the dashboard. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, along with 10 electronic driver-assist features, such as automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection. A highway-assist feature, capable of controlling the vehicle in a marked lane and performing automatic lane changes, is also available.

Pricing details for the 2024 Kia Sorento will be released as the market launch approaches next year.
