This Wednesday marked the debut of Volvo’s novel EX30, boasting eye-catching aesthetics, an impressive performance, and an affordable price point that may sway even the most staunch EV skeptics.

A new addition to Volvo’s roster, the EX30 is a compact electric crossover starting at $36,145, inclusive of a destination charge. This figure undercuts the larger, gas-powered XC40 by a few thousand dollars, and is approximately $10,000 cheaper than the electric XC40 Recharge.

While complete specifications have yet to be released, Volvo has confirmed that the base price applies to the EX30 Core Single Motor Extended Range variant. This model comes with a rear axle-driven single motor for maximum range and features a 69-kwh battery, promising a maximum estimated range of around 275 miles.

For those prioritizing performance, there’s the option of a Twin Motor Performance model, supplementing the existing motor with a front axle electric motor to create a dual-motor all-wheel drive. This high-performance configuration boasts a peak output of 422 hp, facilitating a 0-60 mph sprint in a mere 3.4 seconds – making it the quickest Volvo yet.

The Twin Motor Performance model can be DC fast-charged at up to 153 kw, enabling a 10-80% charge in approximately 27 minutes. Estimated range for this model is around 265 miles.

An additional rugged EX30 Cross Country variant, featuring enhancements like greater ground clearance, underbody shielding, and 19-inch wheels, will start production in 2024. The standard EX30’s production is set to commence later this year, but further details have yet to be shared by Volvo.

While Volvo has not disclosed the EX30’s underlying platform, it is likely to be based on the SEA modular EV platform of parent company Zhejiang Geely, previously seen in the 2021 Zeekr 001 hatchback and the newly unveiled 2025 Polestar 4 crossover. The EX30 will be manufactured in China.

Volvo has confirmed the EX30 will be arriving stateside next summer and is already taking reservations, with reservations for the EX30 Cross Country beginning in 2024. However, it has cautioned that certain models may be limited in availability and a reservation does not guarantee availability of the chosen model. Other automakers have also been marketing low-cost EVs while drastically limiting their supply.

As a budget-friendly option, the EX30 departs from the high-end interior design of Volvo’s larger vehicles, opting for practicality and sustainability. The vehicle features a 12.3-inch touchscreen as the main infotainment hub, with a host of built-in Google apps. It also supports wireless Apple CarPlay and includes an app for remote access to various functions, such as preheating or locating the vehicle.

The console offers an array of storage areas, including one for backseat passengers. A soundbar spans the dash directly beneath the windshield. To aid in loading, Volvo has incorporated a guide displaying key interior dimensions at the rear of the vehicle.

The EX30 also offers customizable design themes referred to as “rooms,” including an eco-friendly theme utilizing recycled denim, plastic, flax-based fibers, and sustainably sourced wool.

Volvo has not compromised on safety for the EX30. High-strength steel fortifies the safety cage, with particular focus on the roof and supporting pillars. The vehicle also comes equipped with Volvo’s Safe Space Technology suite of electronic driver-assist features, including automatic emergency braking. Automated parking with driver supervision is another handy feature that accommodates parallel, perpendicular, and diagonal parking spots.
